PwC and Strategy& case interview: how to prepare (2026)

Strategy& UK states you get one PwC UK application every six months, so where you apply is your first prep decision, not an administrative one. This page helps you make that call, then prepare for what follows.

The Strategy& format
Candidate-ledTwo hiring tracksBehavioral every roundSlide-pack case
The short version
  • Strategy& and PwC Advisory are separate tracks, not seniority levels. Strategy& runs MBB-adjacent strategy cases. PwC's broader Consulting and Advisory practice runs lighter, more operational cases with heavier behavioral weight.
  • Both are candidate-led. You open with the structure, ask for the data, and drive to the recommendation. Nobody hands you the next branch.
  • Behavioral is not a warm-up. Strategy& states each of its three US MBA interviews carries both a case and a behavioral component, and prep sources call fit weightier here than at most firms.
  • Strategy& UK adds a slide-pack case. One first-round interview hands you a deck from a real client project and about ten minutes to read it.
  • The fastest thing you can do today: run one full candidate-led mock out loud instead of reading another framework.

Live voice interview with real follow-up questions, scored on 8 dimensions. Your first one is free, no card needed.

How does the PwC and Strategy& interview process work?

1
Application.Resume screening, and in the UK a personal statement alongside your CV. By most accounts the most competitive step, though neither firm publishes a number.
2
Online assessment. Both tracks screen with online tests first, and what you sit depends on country and role.
3
First round.Candidate-led cases with behavioral questions built in. Strategy& UK describes two back-to-back interviews of about 45 minutes. Strategy& US describes its MBA process differently, as a single round of three virtual interviews, each combining a case and a behavioral component.
4
Final round or assessment day.Two to three more interviews, typically with directors and partners, one commonly weighted toward fit. Strategy& UK notes the second round may run the same day, and that some experienced hires complete a third. In parts of PwC's broader track this becomes an assessment day that can add a group exercise or a case presentation.

PwC vs Strategy&: two tracks inside one firm

This is the distinction most prep content blurs, and getting it wrong can cost you an application slot.

Strategy& is PwC's strategy arm. It came out of the 2014 acquisition of Booz & Company and describes itself as a global strategy consulting firm inside the PwC network, with more than 75 offices and over 3,000 consultants. In the UK it sits within the Deals line of service. The work is corporate strategy, market entry, and mergers and acquisitions, so the cases look like a strategy house's.

PwC Consulting and Advisory is the much larger practice around it. PwC reported $24.3 billion of advisory revenue in its 2025 financial year, covering technology, operations, risk, and deals. The cases reflect that work: more often operational, technology-led, or risk-led, and by most accounts lighter and less quantitative, with more of the decision resting on behavioral questions.

What that changes for you:

  • Case depth. Prepare Strategy& like an MBB interview. Prepare PwC Advisory like a business conversation that happens to contain a structured problem. PwC states plainly that it does not expect firm-specific frameworks.
  • Behavioral weight. High on both sides, unusual for a strategy firm. Some prep sources put fit at 40 to 50 percent of the Strategy& evaluation, but neither firm publishes a weighting, so treat that as directional.
  • You may only get one shot. Strategy& UK states you can apply for only one job within PwC UK in a six-month window. Other countries differ, so check before you submit.

What makes these case interviews different?

You lead, and the silence is yours. Both tracks run candidate-led cases, so the interviewer will not tell you which branch comes next. PwC calls the case a two-way conversation where your interviewer may challenge your thinking, which is exactly where unpracticed candidates go quiet.

There is no answer key, and both firms say so. PwC's careers site states there is no perfect answer and that it is looking at your reasoning, not just your conclusions. Strategy& UK writes that its cases are designed to show how you structure an approach rather than whether you reach the right answer. Narrate the structure, do not sprint to a conclusion.

Fit sits inside the case interview. Behavioral questions open or close the same 45 minutes that holds your case, which compresses your prep. You cannot save the story work for later in the week.

The math is deliberately ordinary. PwC says you may be asked for basic calculations such as market sizing, and that no advanced math is required. What gets scored is whether you stay structured while talking.

What is the PwC and Strategy& online assessment?

This is where generic advice does the most damage, because the battery is country-specific.

As of our August 2026 check, PwC's UK early careers process describes its online assessment as two parts on the SHL platform: an untimed behavioural profile test, then a timed cognitive assessment covering numerical, inductive, and deductive reasoning, with an outcome within 48 hours. After it come an on-demand video interview, a virtual assessment centre with up to five other candidates, and an in-person business assessment with a senior leader.

Two caveats. That is the UK early careers route, which the US Advisory track, experienced hire routes, and Strategy&'s own funnel do not necessarily match. And much prep content describes a branded, game-based PwC assessment of mini-games, which does not appear on the current official page. Trust your invitation email over any walkthrough, including this one.

PwC UK also states directly that it does not endorse providers selling guidance on its recruitment assessments. That applies to us as much as anyone. No tool prepares you for these tests, and CaseRound does not try to.

What does a Strategy& case sound like?

InterviewerOur client is a European industrial distributor, approached about entering the US market. They want a point of view this quarter. Where would you start?
CandidateCan I check the objective first? Is the goal revenue growth, or is this defensive because a competitor is moving?
InterviewerGrowth. The board wants a second engine outside Europe.
CandidateThen three things in order. First, is the US market attractive, meaning size, growth, and how fragmented distribution is. Second, can we win there, which comes down to whether the capabilities that make us profitable in Europe transfer. Third, entry route. I would start with capabilities, because for a distributor the advantage is usually logistics density, and density does not travel.
InterviewerHere is our US market data. What do you take from it?
CandidateGrowth is four percent, so this is not a land grab. The line that matters is the top five players holding under twenty percent, which says fragmented. That makes buying density more plausible than building it, so I would test acquisition before greenfield.

Notice who does the work. The candidate confirms the objective, names an order, commits to a starting point and says why, then treats the exhibit as evidence rather than something to read aloud. That rhythm is only trainable out loud, and a CaseRound mock runs on it live, with an interviewer that probes back.

Train the candidate-led rhythm out loud.

A live voice interviewer takes your structure, pushes on it, and hands you exhibits mid-conversation, then scores the interview on 8 dimensions. Your first full interview is free, no card needed.

What a CaseRound mock gives you
  • A live voice interviewer who probes your answers, out loud
  • Exhibits handed to you mid-conversation, like in the room
  • A score on 8 dimensions plus the full transcript to review
  • Our case library, plus any casebook PDF you upload (Sprint and above)
  • Interviewer-led free, candidate-led mode in the paid library

Not covered, and no tool covers it: the online assessment, the group exercise, the slide-pack or written case, and the behavioral probing. We also do not have PwC's or Strategy&'s own cases.

Which case types do PwC and Strategy& run?

  • Market entry. The most commonly reported Strategy& opener. Expect the follow-up to be about capability transfer, not just market size.
  • Mergers and acquisitions. Frequent at Strategy&, unsurprising given the UK team sits inside Deals. Commercial due diligence flavor.
  • Profitability and cost. The workhorse across both tracks. Split cleanly before diagnosing anything.
  • Market sizing. Reported more often at PwC than at the strategy houses, sometimes as the whole first-round case.
  • Operational, technology, and risk problems. Distinctive to PwC's broader track. Its two published sample scenarios are a bank planning a digital transformation and a healthcare expansion decision, and scenarios differ by practice group.
  • Group and slide-based formats. In some offices an assessment day adds a group case or a case presented from slides. Strategy& UK's first round includes a structured case with a slide pack and roughly ten minutes to review it.

If your structuring still leans on memorized frameworks, read our guide on why memorized frameworks fail first. PwC explicitly says it is not expecting industry jargon.

What does a strong answer sound like?

Same prompt, two answers. The interviewer asks: "The client wants to know whether to expand into a second country. How would you think about it?"

A weak answer opens a framework drawer:

Weak answerI would look at the market, the competition, the customer, and the company. So starting with market attractiveness, then competitive intensity, then our internal capabilities, then the financials.

A strong answer commits and sequences:

Strong answerThree steps. First, is the market worth entering, which is size and growth. Second, and this is where I would spend most of the time, do the things that make us profitable at home actually work there. Third, if both answers are yes, which entry route scales fastest, build or buy. I would start with capability transfer, because a market can be attractive and still be unwinnable for us specifically.

The content overlaps. The difference is that the second names a priority, gives a reason, and creates something the interviewer can push on. Candidate-led cases reward exactly that.

What do PwC and Strategy& interviewers score?

PwC publishes what its interviewers listen for. As of 2026 the list is structured thinking, comfort with ambiguity, communication skills, business intuition and basic numeracy, and curiosity and coachability. That last one is load-bearing. How you respond when an interviewer challenges you is being scored, not just whether you were right.

PwC also states different expectations by level. At Associate level it wants a clear structured approach and does not require prior business experience. At MBA or Senior Associate level it expects deeper business insight and explicit handling of trade-offs.

For behavioral prep, Strategy&'s US MBA page points candidates at the PwC Professional framework. Note that it was updated: the current official version rests on two dimensions, Trusted Leadership and Distinctive Outcomes, while much prep content still lists an older set of five attributes.

When you practice, score yourself on those dimensions instead of just finishing cases. A CaseRound mock scores every interview on 8 dimensions and gives you the full transcript, so you see where a branch went wrong instead of guessing.

How should you practice for PwC or Strategy&?

1
Decide which track you are preparing for.Strategy& means MBB-level case reps. PwC Advisory means lighter cases plus more story work. If you are applying under a one-application rule, choose before you submit.
2
Drill the candidate-led opening. The first ninety seconds are where candidate-led cases are won. Practice saying the objective back, naming three areas, choosing one, and justifying the choice, out loud, without notes. Highest-return rep, and you can do it nightly.
3
Build four behavioral stories that survive follow-ups.Because fit sits inside the case interviews, thin stories get exposed at the moment your working memory is already full. One honest limit: a CaseRound mock trains the case, not the behavioral probing. That part needs a person.
4
Rehearse once from a slide pack.Take any casebook exhibit set, give yourself ten minutes, and present a recommendation to someone.

Where can you find official PwC and Strategy& practice material?

PwC publishes a genuinely useful Advisory case interview prep page with two full sample business scenarios, the questions that go with them, and sample responses split by experience level. Strategy&'s country careers pages, particularly the UK FAQ, spell out the interview sequence in unusual detail, and the PwC Professional page is the right reference for behavioral prep.

One rule straight from PwC: generative AI is not permitted during its assessment and interview process. Practicing with an AI mock beforehand is prep. Using one during the real interview is not.

Running a solved case out loud, with someone probing your answers, teaches you more than reading it. You can do that on CaseRound by uploading the case PDF (Sprint and above). Comparing tools? See how CaseRound compares.

Strategy& vs. McKinsey and Deloitte

Strategy& McKinsey Deloitte
Who leads the case Candidate Interviewer Candidate
Behavioral weight Very high, inside every interview High, PEI every interview High, every round
Case flavor Corporate strategy, market entry, M&A Deep probing across branches Practical, including public sector
Extra formats Slide-pack case, group case in some offices Solve assessment Group case common in finals

What happens after the final round?

Timelines vary more than at the strategy houses because the two tracks run separate funnels. Strategy& US states it aims to give MBA candidates an offer decision within three weeks of the interview day, with the written offer about a week after the verbal one. Candidate-reported averages cluster around four to six weeks from application to decision, though that is self-reported data rather than the firm.

Strategy& UK states you can reapply for any PwC UK role six months after an unsuccessful application. Other countries set their own rules, so your recruiter's dates are the real ones.

Your interview week checklist

  • One page of your own case structures, not memorized frameworks
  • Four behavioral stories, told out loud, that hold up under three follow-up questions
  • A specific answer to "why Strategy&" or "why PwC" that does not work for any other firm
  • Mental math warm-up daily: percentages, growth rates, market sizing
  • At least three full candidate-led voice mocks, including one where you open cold
  • One timed rehearsal presenting a recommendation from a slide pack
  • Confirmation from your recruiter of which formats your office actually uses

Interview this week? One full mock today will do more than another evening of reading. The first one is free, and Sprint covers 30 sessions for $39.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PwC case interview candidate-led or interviewer-led?

Candidate-led in both tracks. You propose the structure, ask for the data you want, and drive to a recommendation. PwC calls it a two-way conversation in which the interviewer may challenge your thinking, so expect to defend choices rather than just present them.

What is the difference between PwC Consulting and Strategy&?

Separate hiring tracks. Strategy& is PwC's strategy arm and runs corporate strategy cases that resemble MBB cases. PwC's broader Consulting and Advisory practice covers technology, operations, risk, and deals, with lighter, more operational cases and more weight on behavioral fit.

How many interviews does Strategy& have?

Typically four to five across two rounds, by most accounts. Strategy& UK describes a first round of two back-to-back 45-minute interviews and a second round that may run the same day. Strategy& US describes its MBA process as one round of three virtual interviews, each containing a case and a behavioral component.

How long is the PwC case interview?

PwC states the case interview is typically 30 to 45 minutes, inside a longer process. In the Strategy& tracks that use 45-minute slots, the case usually takes roughly 25 to 30 minutes.

Can you use a calculator or AI in a PwC interview?

Assume no calculator, and definitely no AI. PwC states that the use of AI or generative AI during its assessment and interview process is not permitted. It also says no advanced math is required, and notes are encouraged.

Does PwC use a group case interview?

In some routes, yes. PwC's UK early careers process includes a virtual assessment centre where you work alongside up to five other candidates. It is not universal and not a given for Strategy&. No practice tool, including ours, simulates the group format.

How hard is it to get an offer at Strategy&?

Prep sources estimate roughly 3 to 5 percent of applicants receive offers, above MBB estimates and below the broader Big Four. Neither firm publishes a rate, so treat every number as directional. The more useful signal is that strong case performers get rejected on fit here.

Can you apply to both PwC and Strategy& at the same time?

In the UK, no. Strategy& UK states you can apply for only one job within PwC UK in a six-month window, and can reapply six months later. Rules differ by country, but plan as if you get one shot per cycle.

How long should you prepare for a PwC or Strategy& case interview?

Most candidates report two to four weeks for the PwC Advisory track and four to eight weeks for Strategy&, reflecting the difference in case depth. If your interview is sooner, prioritize live practice over reading.

Your next interview should not be the real one.

Run a full candidate-led voice mock: live follow-up questions, exhibits mid-conversation, scored feedback on 8 dimensions, and the full transcript to review. The first one is free, no card. Interviewing this month? Sprint is $39 for 30 sessions, no subscription.
