EY-Parthenon case interview: how to prepare (2026)

Strong candidates lose here by analyzing well and never committing to an answer, the failure mode reported more than any other. So this page is about landing the decision, not just the analysis.

The EY-Parthenon format
Candidate-ledPE and CDD casesGroup case roundNumerical screen
The short version
  • The case is candidate-led. You structure the problem, ask for the data, and drive to a recommendation. Closer to Bain and BCG than to McKinsey.
  • Due diligence is the signature flavor. Is the market good, is the target good, is it a buy at this price. The investor lens shows up even in profitability cases.
  • Check which track you applied to. EY-Parthenon and EY Consulting run meaningfully different interviews inside the same firm.
  • There is more than live casing. An online assessment in many regions, a group case in many final rounds, sometimes a written exercise. All of it varies by country.
  • The fastest thing you can do today: run one full candidate-led mock out loud instead of reading another framework.

Live voice interview scored on 8 dimensions, with the full transcript. Your first one is free, no card needed. Candidate-led mode, the format EY-Parthenon uses, is on Sprint and above.

How does the EY-Parthenon interview process work?

1
Application and screening.Resume review, with referrals doing real work as at every strategy firm.
2
An online assessment, in many regions.EY's careers guidance is explicit that "the exact structure and content of the assessment will depend on the country, service line and role to which you apply." Treat any single description you read online as one country's version.
3
First round.By most accounts two interviews, often back to back, each pairing fit questions with a candidate-led case, run by consultants or managers. Some UK strategy routes are reported to use two shorter cases of roughly 25 minutes. First round cases tend to be the more defined ones.
4
Final round. Two or three interviews with senior leaders, commonly including a group case and a leadership conversation that leans behavioral. Final round cases are consistently described as more ambiguous, with interviewers pushing back and introducing data that cuts against your hypothesis. They watch whether you update your view and say why.

Not every candidate sees every stage. Confirm yours with your recruiter.

EY-Parthenon vs. EY: which track are you interviewing for?

This is the most useful thing to get right, because the two run different interviews.

EY-Parthenon is EY's strategy and transactions brand. EY announced in March 2025 that its entire Strategy and Transactions service line moved under the EY-Parthenon brand, taking it to roughly 25,000 people across 150 countries. EY's service pages list corporate and growth strategy, commercial due diligence, private equity value creation, M&A, and turnaround. The cases come out of that work.

EY Consulting is a separate service line. Technology, operations, transformation and risk. Different partners, different projects, different bar.

What that means for prep. EY-Parthenon uses candidate-led strategy cases that prep sources place closer to the MBB standard than to a typical Big 4 screen. EY's broader consulting interviews are more often structured or interviewer-guided, built around implementation problems, with behavioral competencies carrying more weight. Preparing for a generic Big 4 interview is the most common way strong candidates get screened out in round one.

One practical note. The job posting names the service line, so read it first. In some regions eligibility does not carry across EY programs, so an assessment result for one route does not qualify you for an EY-Parthenon strategy route.

What makes the EY-Parthenon case interview different?

You drive, and nobody rescues you. The interviewer answers what you ask and little else. Candidates who present a framework and then wait are running interviewer-led behavior in a candidate-led room.

The investor lens is the default. Even a plain profitability case often ends near "so would you put money into this."

The math is transaction math. Growth rates, margins, market sizing and multiples, out loud, without a calculator.

It is not a Big 4 screen. Every prep source we checked describes difficulty comparable to McKinsey, BCG and Bain.

The commercial due diligence and private equity case flavor

This is what makes EY-Parthenon prep different, and it deserves more time than another profitability drill.

Commercial due diligence is what a private equity fund pays a strategy firm for before it buys a company. The fund has a target and a price, and your job is to test whether the commercial story holds. EY lists it among EY-Parthenon's core services, so this is the work, not a quirk of the interview. A CDD case answers four questions in roughly this order:

1
Is the market attractive?Size, growth, structure, pricing power. A great company in a shrinking market is still a bad deal.
2
Is the target actually good in it?Share, retention, unit economics. Growth alone is not evidence of quality.
3
What could break the thesis?Customer concentration, churn, regulatory or reimbursement exposure. Name these before you are asked.
4
At this price, is it a buy or a pass? You have to land it. By multiple accounts the most common failure here is a candidate who analyzes well and never commits.

The supporting math is the part candidates skip. Run a CAGR, build revenue from volume and price, convert revenue and margin into EBITDA, and apply a multiple, all out loud. At interview speed: 40 million dollars of revenue at a 20 percent EBITDA margin is 8 million of EBITDA, and at 10 times that is an 80 million dollar enterprise value.

How common is the private equity angle? One widely used prep guide puts it near 40 to 50 percent of first round cases. EY publishes nothing here, so treat the number as directional.

What does an EY-Parthenon case sound like?

InterviewerA private equity fund is looking at a chain of forty five urgent care clinics doing about one hundred million dollars in revenue. Should they buy it?
CandidateTwo questions first. Do we have a price, and is this a platform to build on or a standalone hold?
InterviewerRoughly twelve times EBITDA, and treat it as a platform.
CandidateThen I would test market attractiveness, whether this chain is actually winning, what could break the thesis, and whether the platform math works. Can I start with market growth?
InterviewerThe market grows six percent a year. Their revenue grew nine percent last year.
CandidateSo they outgrew the market, which supports the thesis. But before I credit that to performance, I want the nine percent split into new clinic openings versus growth at existing clinics. Same clinic growth is the stronger signal here.

Notice the rhythm. The candidate asks for the price before structuring, commits to an order out loud, and treats every number as evidence for or against an investment decision. A CaseRound mock in candidate-led mode puts you in the same seat.

Train the candidate-led rhythm out loud.

A live voice interviewer answers the questions you ask, hands you exhibits mid-conversation, and scores the interview on 8 dimensions with the full transcript. Your first full interview is free and runs in interviewer-led mode. Candidate-led mode, the format EY-Parthenon uses, comes with Sprint at $39 for 30 sessions.

What a CaseRound mock gives you
  • A live voice interviewer who probes your answers, out loud
  • Candidate-led pacing on Sprint and above, the format EY-Parthenon uses
  • Exhibits handed to you mid-conversation, like in the room
  • A score on 8 dimensions plus the full transcript to review
  • Our case library, plus any casebook PDF you upload (Sprint and above)

Not covered, and no tool covers all of it: the written case, the group exercise, behavioral probing, and EY's online assessment. We also do not have EY-Parthenon's own cases.

Which case types does EY-Parthenon run?

  • Commercial due diligence. The signature. Should a fund acquire this target at this price.
  • Market entry and market attractiveness. Should the client enter, and is the market worth being in.
  • Growth strategy. Where the next increment of revenue comes from, and whether it is durable.
  • Profitability. Margin diagnosis, often ending in an investor question rather than an operational one.
  • Mergers and acquisitions. Target evaluation, synergies, and the price at which the deal stops working.
  • Market sizing. Sometimes standalone, more often a sub-question inside a diligence case.
  • Turnaround and restructuring. Distressed economics and cost reduction on a deadline.

If your structuring still leans on memorized frameworks, read our guide on why memorized frameworks fail first. A CDD case punishes a bolted-on framework.

What does a strong EY-Parthenon answer sound like?

The interviewer says: "The target grew nine percent in a market growing six percent. What does that tell you?"

A weak answer accepts the number at face value:

Weak answerThey are growing faster than the market, so that is a good sign. It probably means they have a strong brand or better locations than competitors.

A strong answer interrogates it and ties it to the decision:

Strong answerIt tells me they gained share, which points the right way, but I would not pay a premium for it yet. I want the nine percent split into new clinic openings versus growth at existing clinics. If most came from openings, we are paying today for capital deployment the fund could do itself. If most came from existing clinics, that is durable and supports the multiple.

Both understood the arithmetic. The second refuses to treat a number as an answer.

What do EY-Parthenon interviewers score?

The dimensions reported consistently are structure, quantitative accuracy, business judgment, synthesis and communication, with two firm-specific weights.

Commitment. The recommendation has to land, with a position and a reason. Not committing is the failure mode prep sources cite most often here.

Teaming. The group case exists to score how you behave with peers. Dominating is scored as harshly as staying silent.

Score yourself on those dimensions instead of counting completed cases. A CaseRound mock scores every interview on 8 dimensions, including structure, math, judgment, synthesis and case leadership, and hands you the full transcript.

What about the written case, group case, and online assessment?

These vary more than anything else, so your recruiter's description beats any guide, including this one.

The group case. Most commonly reported in the final round or assessment day. Three to five candidates get materials, roughly 45 to 60 minutes together, then a group presentation and questions. In a group of five, aim for about a fifth of the airtime and use some of it pulling quieter people in.

The written or data-pack exercise. Reports genuinely conflict. Some describe a short pack of 15 to 20 pages with about 10 minutes to extract what matters. Others describe a 60 to 90 minute exercise followed by a panel presentation. Some candidates never see one. The common mistake is presenting ten findings of equal weight instead of one recommendation backed by the strongest two.

The online assessment. As of 2026, EY's UK student routes describe rank order questions, written and recorded video answers, and a timed numerical reasoning test. EY's US early careers process requires a skills assessment of about 20 minutes. Some experienced-hire routes involve no test. Where a numerical component exists it is chart reading under a clock, not advanced math.

One honest limit: CaseRound does not simulate any of these three.

How should you practice for EY-Parthenon?

1
Train candidate-led driving.Practice opening a case, committing to an order, asking precise questions like "what is the target's share versus the top three competitors" rather than "tell me about competition," and moving to the next branch uninvited.
2
Build a due diligence reflex.Run cases where the deliverable is an investment recommendation, not an insight. Drill CAGR, revenue builds, EBITDA and multiples until they are boring.
3
Do full voice mocks under pressure.Train speaking a structure, doing math while talking, and recovering when data kills your hypothesis.
4
Save scarce person-time for the group case.Case reps run nightly alone.

Where can you find official EY-Parthenon prep resources?

As of our August 2026 check, EY-Parthenon does not publish a public library of practice cases the way McKinsey and BCG do. That changes what official resources means here.

EY-Parthenon's service pages on ey.com. Read what the firm actually sells, especially commercial due diligence, private equity value creation and turnaround. Best proxy for the shape of the cases, and it doubles as material for "why EY-Parthenon."

EY's careers pages on hiring and interview tips. The only place the country and service line caveats come from the firm itself.

EY's practice assessment site. Practice versions of its online tests.

EY-Parthenon's deal and private equity research. Free, current, and the vocabulary a partner expects.

Use it actively. Producing an answer out loud, while someone probes it, is the skill being scored. You can do that on CaseRound with our case library, or by uploading a casebook PDF (Sprint and above). See how CaseRound compares.

EY-Parthenon vs. Bain and McKinsey

EY-Parthenon Bain McKinsey
Who leads the case Candidate Candidate, more standardized in some offices Interviewer
Signature flavor Commercial due diligence Private equity flavored cases Probing depth
Fit format Behavioral, heavy in finals Experience interview PEI, one deep story
Group exercise Common in final rounds Uncommon Not standard
Screening test Varies by country SOVA or TestGorilla by office Solve, game-based

The practical read: if you prepped for Bain, the format transfers and you mostly need diligence math. If you prepped for McKinsey, driving the case yourself is the gap.

What happens after the final round?

Decisions typically arrive within days to a couple of weeks, and the full process most commonly runs four to eight weeks from application to offer. Both ranges vary by office and program. Your recruiter's dates are the real ones.

EY does not publish a standard reapplication waiting period across offices, so ask rather than assume. Its other service lines run their own processes, and in some regions eligibility does not carry across from an EY-Parthenon route.

Your interview week checklist

  • One page of your own case structures, built for diligence questions rather than frameworks
  • Daily math warm-up: CAGR, revenue builds, margins, EBITDA, multiples
  • At least three full voice mocks where you drive the case start to finish
  • One timed written or data-pack rehearsal if your process includes one
  • One group case practiced with real people, watching your share of the airtime
  • Two or three specific reasons for "why EY-Parthenon" that name the diligence work

Interview this week? One full mock today beats another evening of reading. The first one is free, and Sprint covers 30 sessions for $39.

Frequently asked questions

Is the EY-Parthenon case interview candidate-led or interviewer-led?

Candidate-led. You build the structure and drive to a recommendation, and the interviewer supplies data when you ask but does not walk you through the case. A minority of accounts describe individual interviewers being more directive, so be ready for both.

How many rounds does EY-Parthenon have?

Typically two to three, varying by office and program. A common shape is a screening conversation, a first round of two case interviews with consultants or managers, and a final round with senior leaders that often includes a group case.

What is the difference between EY-Parthenon and EY Consulting?

Different service lines inside the same firm, with different interviews. EY-Parthenon is EY's strategy and transactions brand and runs candidate-led strategy cases. EY Consulting covers technology, operations and transformation, with more structured interviews and heavier behavioral weighting.

Is EY-Parthenon as hard as MBB?

By most accounts the case bar is comparable to McKinsey, BCG and Bain rather than a typical Big 4 screen. Nobody publishes acceptance rates, but candidates who prepare against a generic Big 4 standard consistently report getting filtered in round one.

What is a commercial due diligence case?

A private equity fund is considering buying a company and you assess whether the commercial case holds: is the market attractive, is the target strong within it, what could break the thesis, and is it a buy at the price. You must land on an investment decision.

Does EY-Parthenon use a group case interview?

Group cases are widely reported, most often in the final round or assessment day, though not every office includes one. Three to five candidates share materials, present together, and take questions. It is scored on how you behave as a teammate.

Is there an online test for EY-Parthenon?

In many regions yes, and EY states the structure depends on country, service line and role. UK student routes describe rank order, written and recorded video answers plus a timed numerical reasoning test. US early careers applicants complete a required skills assessment of about 20 minutes.

Can you practice the group case or written case with a tool?

Not with ours, and we would rather say so. CaseRound does not simulate group exercises, written cases, behavioral probing or online assessments. What a tool can train is the live case half, the largest component of the process.

How long should you prepare for EY-Parthenon?

Most candidates who report offers describe six to ten weeks, with a block reserved for due diligence mechanics rather than generic casing. If your interview is sooner, prioritize live reps.

Your next interview should not be the real one.

Run a full voice mock: a live interviewer who probes back, exhibits mid-conversation, scored feedback on 8 dimensions, and the full transcript. The first one is free, no card.
