Oliver Wyman case interview: how to prepare (2026)
Oliver Wyman publishes the six steps it wants to see you take in a case, which almost no firm does. Here is what those steps sound like when someone is pushing back on each one.
The Oliver Wyman format- The case is candidate-led, but collaborative. You structure the problem and drive it to a recommendation. Oliver Wyman's own advice is to treat the interviewer as a client who wants you to succeed and can help, so asking for data is expected rather than penalized.
- Math is the filter. Candidates consistently report the highest quantitative bar outside the MBB math rounds, done in your head and on paper with no calculator. Prep sources agree this is where most rejections happen between the first and final round.
- Financial services flavor is real. Banking, insurance, and risk are widely described as the firm's largest practice area, and cases often carry that vocabulary even for generalist roles.
- A written case shows up in many final rounds. Typically a packet of exhibits, time alone to build a short presentation, then a defense. It varies by office and role, so your invitation is the only reliable source.
- The fastest thing you can do today: run one full candidate-led case out loud with no calculator, saying every calculation as you do it.
Live voice interview with real follow-up questions, scored on 8 dimensions. Your first one is free, no card needed.

What makes the Oliver Wyman case interview different?
You lead, and you are meant to lean on the interviewer. Oliver Wyman's careers guidance is unusually explicit: "Think of your case interviewer as your client. They want you to solve the problem, and can help you to do so. Work together." That is a real instruction, not politeness. Candidates who treat the case as a solo performance and never ask for data underperform against candidates who drive hard and still check in.
The firm publishes the approach it wants to see. Its six steps are pinpoint the issue, break it down, pick an approach, analyze the issues, use numbers, and make a recommendation. Very few firms hand you their own rubric this directly, and matching it costs you nothing.
Numbers are a named step, not a sub-skill. "Use numbers" sits in the firm's own six steps, with the instruction to show quantitative skill and be careful with simple calculations. Full section below, because this is the part that decides outcomes.
The content skews financial. Financial services, insurance, and risk are widely described as the firm's largest practice area, and case prompts reflect that more often than at generalist strategy houses. You will not be rejected for not knowing what a combined ratio is, but you will move faster if you do.
Practical over theoretical. The firm says it develops "practical solutions, not theoretical constructs" and lists common sense applied to complex business problems as something it assesses. A clean framework that produces an unusable recommendation lands poorly.
How does the Oliver Wyman interview process work?
Two rounds, with an online assessment in front of them for most candidates. Oliver Wyman itself only publishes that the process uses "a mix of conversational and case interviews," so treat everything more specific as candidate-reported and confirm your schedule with your recruiter.
One 2026 note that confuses candidates mid-process: Marsh McLennan began branding as Marsh in January 2026. Oliver Wyman goes to market as Oliver Wyman, a Marsh business, and the operating unit Oliver Wyman Group became Marsh Management Consulting. The recruiting process was not restructured by the rebrand, so do not read a changed logo as a changed interview.
What is the Oliver Wyman math bar?
Higher than almost anywhere else, and enforced without a calculator. This is the single most consistent theme across every 2025 and 2026 source, and the most common reported reason strong first-round candidates do not get offers.
Two things make it harder than the arithmetic itself suggests.
First, the numbers are less friendly. Instead of round market sizes, expect basis points, ratios, per-unit economics, and compound changes. A percentage of a percentage shows up constantly. Financial services cases add their own vocabulary: net interest margin, loss ratio, combined ratio, cost to income. None of it is advanced math, but converting between those units under time pressure is a trained skill.
Second, you narrate while you compute. Silence is expensive. The interviewer is scoring whether you set the calculation up correctly, whether you know roughly where the answer should land before you get there, and whether you catch your own errors. Candidates consistently report being asked to walk back through a step they already got right, purely to see whether they understood it or fell into it.
Two examples of the level. "Deposits cost 90 basis points last year and 180 this year. Loan yield went from 5.4 to 5.5 percent. What happened to spread?" You should reach a loss of about 80 basis points in seconds and say it in those units. Or: "Premiums are 400 million, the loss ratio is 72 percent, and the expense ratio is 31 percent. Are we making money underwriting?" No, the combined ratio is 103, so roughly 12 million of underwriting loss, and you should say the number and the direction together.
The skill being tested is not arithmetic speed. It is estimating the answer before computing it, announcing your rounding, and staying structured while talking.
What does an Oliver Wyman case sound like?
Notice the rhythm. The candidate commits to a split, asks for exactly two numbers, does the math out loud in the interviewer's units, and then gets pushed on the one step that separates understanding from luck. That last probe is the Oliver Wyman signature, and it is trainable only by speaking under pressure.
Train the candidate-led rhythm with the math out loud.
A live voice interviewer probes your answers, hands you exhibits mid-conversation, and scores the interview on 8 dimensions. Your first full interview is free, no card needed.
- A live voice interviewer who probes your answers, out loud
- Candidate-led mode, the format Oliver Wyman uses
- Exhibits handed to you mid-conversation, like in the room
- Math you have to narrate, with follow-up questions on the step you just did
- A score on 8 dimensions plus the full transcript to review
- Our case library, plus any casebook PDF you upload (Sprint and above)
Not covered, and no tool covers it: the written case, the online assessment, and conversational or behavioral probing. We also do not have Oliver Wyman's own cases.
What is the Oliver Wyman written case?
A packet of exhibits, time alone to build a short presentation, then a discussion where you defend it. It appears in many final rounds but not all offices, and Oliver Wyman publishes nothing about it, so your invitation email is the only reliable source.
The most commonly reported shape is roughly 30 minutes to work through the materials and build slides, followed by roughly 30 minutes to present and take questions. Some accounts describe a single 45 minute block and a three slide deliverable instead. Take the variation as the honest answer rather than picking one.
What travels across every version:
This is the part of the process no practice tool replicates, ours included. If your final round includes one, do a timed dry run with a real deck and a friend asking questions.
What is the Oliver Wyman online assessment?
Most commonly a numerical reasoning test taken before interviews, and the step where published guides disagree most, so hold every specific loosely.
Recent accounts converge on numerical reasoning under time pressure: chart interpretation, percentages, ratios, and business arithmetic rather than pure math. Beyond that, sources split. Reported lengths run from about 20 minutes to a full hour, question counts from under 20 to around 40, and calculator policy differs by report. The platform reportedly varies by recruiting region, with SHL and Korn Ferry Talent Q both named. Some offices are also described as using a behavioral or situational component instead of, or alongside, the numerical one.
That spread is not sloppy reporting. Assessment vendors and formats are country and office specific, which is exactly why a guide that states one global format is wrong for most readers.
Two things help regardless. Read the invitation email twice, because it names your actual assessment. And warm up chart reading and percentage math under a timer. Case practice sharpens the same underlying skill, but no tool prepares you for the assessment itself, ours included.
Which case types does Oliver Wyman run?
- Profitability and margin diagnosis. The most common shape. Often carried in financial metrics rather than simple revenue minus cost.
- Market sizing. Frequently reported in the first round, sometimes as the whole case rather than a sub-question.
- Market entry and expansion. Should the client enter this segment or geography, and what do the unit economics have to look like to justify it.
- Pricing and product economics. Where the per-unit math and the strategic judgment collide.
- Operational efficiency and cost. Cost to income, process throughput, network or branch footprint.
- Financial services specific. Banking margin, insurance underwriting, and risk or regulatory prompts, especially for roles in those practices.
If your structuring still leans on memorized frameworks, read why memorized frameworks fail before drilling case types. A borrowed framework survives about one Oliver Wyman follow-up question.
What does a strong Oliver Wyman answer sound like?
Same prompt, two answers. The interviewer says: "Premiums grew twelve percent last year, but underwriting profit went negative. What could explain that?"
A weak answer lists possibilities:
A strong answer commits to the mechanics, orders the checks, and names a next step:
The content overlaps almost entirely. The difference is that the second answer names the mechanism, sorts by likelihood, and ends with one testable request. That is what the interviewer is scoring, and it is trainable.
What do Oliver Wyman interviewers score?
The firm publishes its own list, which is rarer than it sounds. Its careers site says case interviews assess whether you break complex problems into logical components, evaluate data and build a bigger picture, think outside the box, apply common sense to produce practical solutions, ask the right questions to pinpoint priority issues, and communicate ideas clearly.
Two of those deserve emphasis because candidates underweight them. Asking the right questions is scored, so a case run entirely on assumptions reads worse than one where you request the two numbers that matter. And communication is scored continuously, which is why going silent for 40 seconds of mental arithmetic costs more than a rounding error would.
What the firm does not publish is any weighting between the case and the conversational interviews, or any pass threshold. Prep sources speculate. Nobody outside the firm knows.
When you practice, score yourself on those dimensions instead of counting completed cases. A CaseRound mock scores every interview on 8 dimensions, including structure, math, judgment, synthesis, and communication, and returns the full transcript so you can see exactly where a branch went wrong.
How should you practice for Oliver Wyman?
Save your scarce person-time for the written case and the fit stories. The live case reps and the math are the part you can run nightly.
Where can you find official Oliver Wyman practice cases?
On the firm's own careers site, and they are the best starting point available. As of our August 2026 check, Oliver Wyman publishes six practice cases: Urban Grocers, Supermarket Pharmacy, Dairy Farm, Autism Digital Device, Oil Gas Price Strategy, and Poseidon Water Park. The same page carries the six-step approach and the list of what case interviews assess.
Note what that list tells you: the published cases are broader than the firm's financial services reputation. Do not conclude the interview will avoid banking and insurance, and do not conclude it will be full of it.
Use them actively, not passively. Reading a solved case teaches you what a good answer looks like. Running one out loud, with someone probing the step you just did, teaches you to produce one. You can do that on CaseRound too: upload the case PDF and run it as a live voice interview (Sprint and above). One thing we do not have and will not claim: Oliver Wyman's own interview cases. Oliver Wyman vs. McKinsey and Bain
| Oliver Wyman | McKinsey | Bain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who leads the case | Candidate, collaboratively | Interviewer | Candidate |
| Signature element | Written case in many finals | PEI in every interview | Private equity flavored cases |
| Screening | Numerical assessment, varies by office | Solve, game-based | SOVA or TestGorilla by office |
| Case flavor | Financial services, insurance, risk | Strategy first, deep probing | Results and implementation |
| Quantitative bar | Highest of the three by most accounts | High | High |
What happens after the final round?
Faster than most firms at the office level, but the published timelines contradict each other badly. Some 2026 guides describe roughly a month from application to offer, while others put the full process at two to three months. Both are probably true somewhere, because office and program differ. Ask your recruiter for the decision date rather than trusting any number online, including the ones in this paragraph.
On rejection, the commonly reported reapplication window is 12 to 24 months at the same office, with applying to a different office sometimes possible sooner. Oliver Wyman publishes no policy, and recruiters answer this question directly, so ask rather than assume. Candidates who reach the final round and lose it on the written case or the math specifically are a well-recognized group, and that is a fixable gap rather than a verdict.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Oliver Wyman case interviewer-led or candidate-led?
Candidate-led. You structure the problem, ask for data, and drive to a recommendation, in the same family as Bain and BCG. The firm's own framing adds a nuance worth taking literally: treat the interviewer as a client who wants you to solve the problem and can help you do it. Driving hard and asking for what you need are not in conflict here.
How hard is the math at Oliver Wyman?
By most accounts the hardest quantitative bar among the major strategy firms, and it is the most commonly cited reason candidates fail between the first and final round. The arithmetic itself is not advanced. What raises the bar is unfriendly units like basis points and ratios, financial services vocabulary, and doing it all while narrating.
Can you use a calculator in an Oliver Wyman interview?
Not in the live case, by all candidate accounts. Mental math and paper only. The online assessment is a separate question and reports differ by office and platform, so check your invitation rather than assuming either way.
Does Oliver Wyman have a written case?
In many final rounds, yes, though not in every office or for every role. The most commonly reported format is around 30 minutes with a packet of exhibits followed by around 30 minutes to present and defend your recommendation. Some accounts describe a single 45 minute block instead. Confirm with your recruiter.
What is the Oliver Wyman online assessment?
Most often a timed numerical reasoning test sent before interviews. Reported lengths, question counts, calculator policy, and platform all vary by recruiting region, which is why guides contradict each other. Your invitation email names your actual assessment, and it is the only source worth trusting on the format.
Do you need financial services knowledge to pass?
No, but it helps enough to be worth an afternoon. Financial services, insurance, and risk are widely described as the firm's largest practice area, and case prompts reflect that. Knowing net interest margin, loss ratio, combined ratio, and cost to income means you spend your thinking on the problem instead of the vocabulary.
How many interviews does Oliver Wyman have?
Typically four to five across two rounds: two in the first round, one case and one conversational, then two to three in the final round. Oliver Wyman publishes no round count and it varies by office, role, and program, so treat this as the common pattern rather than a guarantee.
Does the Marsh rebrand change the interview process?
Not the process itself. Marsh McLennan began branding as Marsh in January 2026, Oliver Wyman now goes to market as Oliver Wyman, a Marsh business, and the operating unit Oliver Wyman Group became Marsh Management Consulting. Recruiting materials and job postings may carry either name during the transition. The case interview described here is unchanged.
How long should you prepare?
Most candidates describe four to eight weeks of focused preparation, with a larger share of it on math than they would spend for other firms. If your interview is sooner, prioritize live practice over reading, and prioritize calculator-free math over both. One full mock exposes more gaps than a weekend of theory.
Your next interview should not be the real one.
Run a full candidate-led voice mock: live follow-up questions, exhibits in the conversation, math you have to narrate, and scored feedback on 8 dimensions. The first one is free, no card. Interviewing this month? Sprint is $39 for 30 sessions, no subscription.
