OC&C case interview: how to prepare (2026)
Being right is not enough here, because interviewers keep asking why and the cases reward an option nobody else had listed. Here is how to practice that, out loud, against something that pushes back.
The OC&C format- You drive the case. Most recent guides describe OC&C cases as candidate-led and hypothesis-driven. You open with a structure, ask for the data you want, and keep moving without being handed the next question.
- There is an online test before anyone meets you. Numerical reasoning is the constant across every account, no calculator, and OC&C confirms the test exists without publishing its format.
- The case content is commercial, not theoretical. Consumer goods, retail, leisure and private equity due diligence run through the firm's work and through its cases, which interviewers often draw from real engagements.
- Two rounds, partners at the end. OC&C's London graduate listings have described a case round followed by two 45 minute interviews with associate partners and partners.
- The fastest thing you can do today: take one consumer or retail prompt and drive it out loud to a recommendation, without stopping to look anything up.
Live voice interview with real follow-up questions, scored on 8 dimensions. Your first one is free, no card needed.

What makes the OC&C case interview different?
You are expected to drive. Three of the four current prep guides we checked call OC&C cases candidate-led and hypothesis-driven. One 2026 guide calls them "interviewer-led but candidate-driven in thinking." The practical read is the same: nobody rescues a stalled case, and a structure you never use earns nothing.
The probing is relentless. Interviewers are consistently described as challenging assumptions in the moment and asking why repeatedly. Being right is not enough. You have to hold the reasoning up while someone pushes on it.
The commercial frame is the point. OC&C sells strategy rather than implementation, and its cases are frequently drawn from real engagements. Expect business texture: a category growing at a specific rate, an investor with a specific hold period.
Numbers without a calculator, twice. The online test screens mental math before you meet anyone, and the cases test it again out loud. Candidates report dense tables rather than round numbers.
How does the OC&C interview process work?
The caveat: OC&C runs roughly 15 offices across 10 countries, and the detail above comes mostly from its UK graduate pipeline. Your recruiter's description is the only version that binds.
What is the OC&C online test?
OC&C confirms a test exists and publishes nothing about its format, so treat the specifics as reports rather than facts. Numerical reasoning is the one constant. Beyond that the sources split between a roughly 30 minute numerical and logical test, sometimes paired with a one-way video assessment, and a 45 minute GMAT-style paper in SHL format covering quantitative and verbal reasoning. No calculator in any account.
What helps: drill percentages, ratios and data interpretation on paper under a clock. Nothing replicates the test itself, and no tool, including ours, prepares you for it.
What does the consumer and retail case flavor mean for you?
OC&C was founded in London in 1987 by three consultants out of Booz Allen's consumer goods practice, and it never drifted far from that. Its own site lists consumer goods, retail, leisure and hospitality, TMT, B2B services, digital and private equity and M&A. Much of the private equity work is commercial due diligence: telling an investor whether a market is attractive and whether this asset can win in it. That heritage changes what a good answer looks like.
What does an OC&C case sound like?
Notice what the candidate does. Every turn commits, names why it matters, and proposes the next analysis without waiting to be asked. That rhythm is trainable, but only out loud and only when something pushes back. A CaseRound mock in candidate-led mode runs on this rhythm, live, with an interviewer that challenges your reasoning.
Train the candidate-led rhythm out loud.
A live voice interviewer challenges your assumptions, brings exhibits into the conversation, and scores the interview on 8 dimensions. Your first full interview is free, no card needed.
- A live voice interviewer that probes your reasoning, out loud
- Candidate-led pacing, so you drive the case the way OC&C expects
- Exhibits handed to you mid-conversation, like in the room
- A score on 8 dimensions plus the full transcript to review
- Our case library, plus any casebook PDF you upload (Sprint and above)
Not covered, and no tool covers it: the online numerical and verbal test, any written or presentation exercise, and the fit conversation about why OC&C. Those need a person or the real thing.
Which case types does OC&C run?
- Market sizing. Frequently reported, and usually carrying commercial weight rather than being a warm-up. "How big is the UK premium pet food market" really means "is this category worth an investor's time."
- Growth strategy. Where the next hundred million of revenue comes from, and what has to be true for it to work.
- Pricing. Price architecture, promotional depth, private label pressure.
- Profitability. Margin diagnosis with retail primitives underneath it, not a generic revenue-minus-cost tree.
- Private equity due diligence. Market attractiveness, competitive position, and whether the asset supports the investment case.
If your structuring still leans on memorized frameworks, read our guide on why memorized frameworks fail first. OC&C's commercial prompts punish borrowed structures.
What does a strong OC&C answer sound like?
The interviewer says: "Our client is a UK specialty retailer. Like-for-like sales have fallen four percent for two years running. What is going on?"
A weak answer inventories the possibilities:
A strong answer commits, uses retail primitives, and asks for one thing:
The content overlaps. The difference is that the second answer picks a lens, names what would prove it wrong, and moves. That is what "commercially grounded" means in practice.
What do OC&C interviewers score?
Prep sources converge on five things: approach and structure, analytical thinking, creative thinking, use of data, and communication, with business acumen underneath all of them. Creativity as its own criterion is worth noticing. OC&C's graduate brochure runs under the banner "Uncommon Sense," and accounts describe cases that reward generating an option the interviewer had not listed. The three criteria OC&C publishes for your CV, "Intellectual curiosity," "Extracurricular interests," and "Commercial awareness," read as what it values in the room too.
When you practice, score yourself on those dimensions instead of counting completed cases. A CaseRound mock scores every interview on 8 dimensions, including structure, math, judgment, synthesis and case leadership, and hands you the transcript.
How should you practice for OC&C?
Save your scarce person-time for the fit conversation and any written exercise. The case reps you can do nightly.
Where can you find official OC&C prep resources?
OC&C's careers site is thinner than McKinsey's or BCG's. As of our August 2026 check we found no published OC&C practice case library, so anyone selling you "OC&C's own cases" is selling something else.
What is genuinely official: the "Your Application" pages with the three CV criteria, the UK and global graduate recruitment brochures as PDFs, and the firm's virtual case study workshops, described as a "2-hour skills session" on "how to ace a case study interview" run by OC&C consultants. The workshops cluster around the autumn cycle and are the closest thing to first-party case guidance on offer.
Beyond that, read OC&C's sector research on consumer goods and retail. It shows how the firm frames a market, which is the frame its cases are built in. Then practice out loud. You can run any case PDF as a live voice interview on CaseRound (Sprint and above). Comparing tools? See how CaseRound compares.
OC&C vs. L.E.K. and Bain
| OC&C | L.E.K. | Bain | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who leads the case | Candidate, with heavy challenge | Candidate | Candidate-led, more standardized in some offices |
| Screening test | Online numerical test, format unpublished | Numerical or game-based by office | SOVA or TestGorilla by office |
| Sector flavor | Consumer goods, retail, private equity | Life sciences, private equity, due diligence | Private equity flavored cases |
| Signature twist | Commercial texture and creative options | Timed written case in the final round | Structured experience interview |
What happens after the final round?
OC&C publishes less about timing than most firms its size. What it commits to: confirmation within 48 hours, and for fixed-deadline roles, feedback "within 3 weeks of the closing date." Candidate accounts put the full process at roughly two to three months with about two weeks between stages, but that is a prep-source pattern rather than anything the firm states.
OC&C publishes no reapplication policy and no pass rate. If you are rejected, ask your recruiter about reapplying, since practice varies by office.

Frequently asked questions
Is the OC&C case interview candidate-led or interviewer-led?
Candidate-led, by most current accounts. You open with a structure, ask for the data you need, and drive to a recommendation. One 2026 guide calls it interviewer-led with candidate-driven thinking, so the honest answer is that the interviewer controls the information while you control the direction.
How many interviews does OC&C have?
Commonly two rounds of two interviews each. OC&C's London graduate listings describe a case round of two 30 minute interviews followed by two 45 minute case interviews with associate partners and partners. Counts and lengths vary by office and level.
What is on the OC&C online test?
OC&C confirms a test exists but does not publish its format. Numerical reasoning appears in every candidate account. Reports otherwise split between a roughly 30 minute numerical and logical test, sometimes with a one-way video assessment, and a 45 minute GMAT-style paper covering quantitative and verbal reasoning. No calculator in any version.
Does OC&C have a written case or presentation exercise?
Possibly, depending on your office. Two 2026 prep guides mention a written case or short presentation exercise in some final rounds, and two others describe the process without one. OC&C publishes nothing about it. Ask your recruiter, because it is the stage you cannot improvise.
Can you use a calculator in an OC&C interview?
No. Case math is done on paper and explained out loud, and the online test is also reported as calculator-free. The numbers are manageable. Staying structured while talking is the hard part.
What kind of cases does OC&C ask?
Market sizing, growth strategy, pricing, profitability and private equity due diligence, weighted toward consumer goods, retail and leisure. Cases are frequently drawn from real engagements, so they carry more commercial texture than generic practice cases.
Do you need consumer or retail experience to get in?
No. OC&C hires graduates with no sector background and says it looks for people who are "curious, creative and enjoy working alongside a team." Fluency beats expertise. Knowing how a retailer makes money and how an investor thinks about an exit puts you ahead.
Can a tool prepare you for the whole OC&C process?
No, and be suspicious of anything claiming otherwise. A voice mock trains the case half: structuring out loud, driving under challenge, doing math while talking, reading exhibits live. It does not cover the online test, any written exercise, or the fit conversation, and no tool holds OC&C's cases.
How long should you prepare?
Most candidates report four to eight weeks of focused preparation. If your interview is sooner, prioritize live practice over reading, especially in a candidate-led format where the failure mode is hesitation.
Your next interview should not be the real one.
Run a full candidate-led voice mock: live follow-up questions that challenge your reasoning, scored feedback on 8 dimensions, and the full transcript to review. The first one is free, no card. Interviewing this month? Sprint is $39 for 30 sessions, no subscription.
